Darkness/Tenebre (1934)

From a technical point of view, it’s a good film, with sharp cinematography, careful editing, and understated yet appropriate set design. Brignone, who has good instincts, understood that the little story about that dead man who isn’t really dead—and those three supposed murderers who can’t remember how they committed a crime that later turns out not to exist—couldn’t be taken seriously. However, it’s clear he wasn’t given full creative freedom and didn’t have the courage to push further into the comedic elements. That’s a shame, because Tenebre, with a less gloomy title, might have been more enjoyable. Miranda can certainly aspire to climb the heights of cinematic Olympus, provided she works on her diction, since she undoubtedly possesses strong photogenic qualities. Dino Falconi, Popolo d’Italia – May 13, 1934.

Dino Falconi, Popolo d’Italia – May 13, 1934.
