When his sister stops writing to him, Stefano travels to Rome to investigate. Soon after his arrival he befriends Erica, a young woman who claims to know his sister and can explain her disappearance. However, it’s not long before Stefano is dragged into the seedy Rome nightlife and gets mixed up with a gang of cocaine smugglers.

Graduating in architecture following WW2, he entered the world of cinema as a set designer and costume designer; in 1949 he directed his first film with Renato Rascel, Maracatumba… Ma non e una Rumba, which was followed by other films in the comedy genre before finally settling into television directing where he appears to have enjoyed most success. He directed some of the most popular variety shows on Italian television such as Senza Rete and Fantastico. He is also credited with discovering a large number of artists including the comedian-cum-politician Beppe Grillo. He also directed episodes Non Stop, an innovative variety show which marked the starting point for a series of important comedians, such as Massimo Troisi, Francesco Nuti, and Carlo Verdone.

Suffering from severe depression, on November 5, 1989 he fired a gun in his mouth: he fell into a coma and died nine days later.
