(4 June 1969) The VIII section of the film review commission, having examined the film and having heard a representative from the production company, expresses by a majority decision against the granting of authorisation for public screening. As the numerous nude scenes, often included in episodes of sexual psychopathology and culminating in crudely realised sequences of sadism, are clearly morally offensive.

(4 giugno 1969) La VIII sezione della commissione di revisione cinematografica esaminato il film e sentito il rappresentante della società produttrice esprime a maggioranza parere contrario alla concessione del nulla osta di proiezione in pubblico. In quanto le numerose scene di nudo, spesso inserite in episodi di psicopatologia sessuale e culminati in sequenze di sadismo crudemente realizzate costituiscono palese offesa al buon costume.

Having been refused first time around, it was taken to appeal less than two weeks later on 19 June where, again, it was refused a certificate…

(Modification of 19 July 1969) (…) The commission, having reviewed the film and having heard company representative as requested, can only confirm the first degree judgement, as the film takes forms of sexual psychology (in particular sadism) as a pretext to insist on erotic scenes manifestly offensive to morality

(Modifica del 19 luglio 1969) La commissione di appello formata dalla rinione delle sezioni III e IV per revisionare il film di nazionalità italiana “Eros thanatos” di produzione Crown Film in base al ricorso presentato dalla dista interessata avverso il provvedimento di diniego del nulla osta di proiezione in pubblico adottato su conforme parere della commissione di I grado. (…) La commissione, previsionato il film e sentito come da richiesta il rappresentante della ditta ad unanimità non può che confermare il giudizio di primo grado in quanto il film prende a pretesto forme di psicologia sessuale (in particolare sadismo) per insistere su scene erotiche manifestamente offensive del buon costume

Failing to win the appeal, Raptus was eventually resubmitted on 17 October – with a list of the required cuts…

(October 17, 1969) The VIII section of the film review commission, having viewed the film, suspends the session and by majority decision requests the following cuts: -1) Crime sequence in the hut: scene from when the girl begins to undress until she is lying on the hay. From the same scene, delete all the photographs that portray her in front and in the foreground; – 2) Scene between the boy and the waiter, specifically when the boy turns to look at him; – 3) overhead shot of the dead girl on the bed while being caressed; – 4) Sequence in the torture room: eliminate all the first part in which the actor (Folco) Lulli fools around with the hot pincers on the body of the girl lying on the bed. On 16/10/1969 the commission, having ascertained that the suggested cuts have been made, expresses a favourable opinion on the granting of the authorisation for public screening on the condition that it is forbidden to screen it to minors under the age of 18 due to some nudity and episodes of sadism, albeit limited after making the cuts.

(17 ottobre 1969) La VIII sezione della commissione di revisione cinematografica, visionato il film sospende la seduta ed a maggioranza invita ad effettuare i seguenti tagli: -1) Sequenza delitto nella capanna: scena da quando la ragazza comincia a spogliarsi fino a quando viene coricata sul fieno. Dalla stessa scena, eliminare tutte le fotografie che la ritraggono di fronte ed in primo piano; – 2) Scena tra il ragazzo e il cameriere in particolare da quanto il ragazzo si volta a guardarlo; – 3) panoramica della ragazza morta sul letto mentre viene accarezzata; – 4) Sequenza nella stanza della tortura: eliminare tutta la prima parte nella quale l’attore Lulli scherza con le tenaglie roventi sul corpo della ragazza distesa sul letto. In data 16/10/1969 la commissione, constatato che sono stati effettuati i tagli suggeriti esprime parere favorevole alla concessione del nulla osta di proiezione in pubblico a condizione e che ne sia vietata la visione ai minori degli anni 18 per alcune scene di nudo ed episodi di sadismo sia pure limitati dopo l’effettuazione dei tagli.

What happened next is still something of a mystery… The original title is listed as Eros & Thanatos – this was the title when it was submitted to the censors – but there is no promotional material to suggest it was actually released. However, that doesn’t meant it wasn’t – it may have simply had a very limited release.
