Born Giuseppe Tagliavia in Castelvetrano, Trapani, Roberto Mauri began his career as an actor in a series of low-budget films, occasionally also playing the lead role. He debuted as a director with the hostage drama Lost Souls (co-directed with Andrea Bianchi)
Mostly active between the 1960s and the first half of the 1970s, Mauri specialised in the Italo-Western genre where he was often credited as Robert Johnson.
