Having suffered a terrible injury in a car stunt gone wrong, a stuntman wakes up in hospital believing he is the Messiah. Upon leaving the hospital he comes to the rescue of a young drug addict who is being attacked by a gang of thugs. She invites him back to her home and they make love. Then he enters a villa where clergymen, politicians and businessmen are taking part in an orgy and he scares them away. Caught up in street protests, he is arrested by a group of left-wing extra-parliamentarians but manages to escape. He heals a blind man who gives him the power to perform miracles. Knowing he has the public on his side he takes to the streets railing against the powerful who are involved in scandals and robberies, demanding their just punishment…

With nods to everything from Leonardo Da Vinci’s The Last Supper, Pasolini’s Salò, Pier Carpi’s Povero Cristo and a (long) long list of other high-brow references, director Antonio D’Agostino’s The Ceremony of the Senses is a hugely ambitious affair with a reasonably qualified cast and what looks like a rather sizeable budget. For an art-house film there’s no denying it looks the part – but the devil here really is in the details… and the details here are LSD, hardcore porn, police violence, utterly corrupt politicians/priests/businessmen, XXX transsexual superstar Eva Robins, an extended orgy involving all of the previous, plus some S&M, scat, water-sports… and finally, Jesus.
